Multi-RAT networks combine several Radio Access Technologies to deliver the service to users (e.g 5G NR, UMTS, LTE, Wi-Fi).

Heterogeneous cellular networks comprise more than one layer of cells of different sizes aimed at dealing with specific targets or constraints such as increasing network capacity, optimising coverage, coping with different propagation conditions in separate frequency bands, etc.

5G NR provides operators with additional options for designing multi-layer networks by adding small cells to boost the radio access network (RAN)  capacity and deliver new services.

Multi-RAT planning is the planning of those multiple layers as a single network, taking into account multi-technology coverage targets, traffic sharing and offloading between layers, as well as installation and implementation constraints (e.g. shared antennas).
